Every holiday in China, hitting the cinema becomes the number one activity for those who aren’t into travelling. This year’s May Day holiday was no exception – 8 movies released, and so far they’ve raked in over 1.3 billion yuan! I, like many others, spent a good chunk of my holiday glued to the big screen.
According to the stats from Dengta Professional, as of May 4th, the total box office for new May Day releases exceeded 1.3 billion yuan, hitting a cool 1.312 billion. Leading the pack are ‘Operation: Mekong’, ‘Fast & Furious 10’ and ‘City Hunter’, pulling in 341 million, 294 million, and 259 million yuan respectively. They’re seriously killing it!
The top dog, ‘Operation: Mekong’, is a gripping action flick that’s had everyone buzzing. Directed by Dante Lam and produced by Andrew Lau, this movie boasts a star-studded cast including Huang Jingyu, the one and only Wang Yibo, and Zhong Chuxi. It tells the story of Chinese peacekeepers in action overseas, and let me tell you, it packs a punch! This isn’t Wang Yibo’s first May Day rodeo either. Last year, his movie ‘Born To Fly’ took home 850 million yuan, proving his star power is no joke.
Another film that deserves a shout-out is ‘Spy x Family Code: White’, coming in at number four. It’s based on the wildly popular manga series by Tatsuya Endo, and it’s a real crowd-pleaser. The story follows a ‘fake family’ on a mission to save the world, packed with heartwarming moments and tons of laughs. The animation style is super cute, and the storyline is engaging without being too complex. Its 7.6 rating on Douban speaks for itself! Its success goes to show that people love a good laugh and a heartwarming story, even in the midst of all the action.
Overall, this May Day holiday was a wild ride at the cinema, and it seems like everyone had a blast. The box office numbers reflect the popularity of these films, and it’s safe to say Chinese cinema is thriving. As for me, I’m already looking forward to the next holiday and the next batch of movies. Bring on the popcorn!
