The buzz around Samsung’s Galaxy AI has been impossible to ignore, and now, the wait is finally over for us Hongkongers! The Cantonese language pack is officially here, bringing the power of AI right to our fingertips. I couldn’t wait to dive in and see what all the fuss was about, and let me tell you, it’s pretty cool.

If you’ve got a Galaxy S24, S23, Z Fold5, Z Flip5, or Tab S9 (sorry, Tab S9 FE folks!), you can grab the new language pack right now. Just head to Settings > General management > Language packs, and you’re good to go! [Just a heads-up, your device needs to be running One UI 6.1, and it’s a good idea to update all your built-in apps in the Galaxy Store too.]

With the Cantonese pack in action, Galaxy AI unlocks a whole new world of possibilities. I’m talking real-time in-call translation with Call Assist, instant translation in Interpreter, smarter typing with Chat Assist, and even AI-powered note taking, transcription, and web browsing. It’s like having a super-powered assistant tucked away in your phone.

I jumped straight into testing Call Assist and Transcript Assist, and honestly, I was impressed. Call Assist was surprisingly accurate, even when I was channeling my inner “Tam Jai” accent. It caught about 90% of what I was saying and translated it into English without missing a beat. Sure, the translation could sound a bit formal at times, but it got the message across, which is all that matters. Just be warned, if you’re a fast talker like me, the AI might need a moment to catch up!

Transcript Assist was another winner. It could easily tell the difference between 2 or 3 different voices and could even summarize the conversation, which is a lifesaver for anyone who’s ever had to sit through a long meeting. The only thing to keep in mind is that everyone needs to be speaking the same language. If you’ve got a mix of Cantonese and English, the AI gets a bit lost. Still, if you’re in a meeting where everyone’s on the same page, language-wise, this feature is incredibly handy.

Overall, my first experience with the Cantonese Galaxy AI has been really positive. It’s clear that Samsung has put a lot of effort into making this technology accessible and useful for us Cantonese speakers. The AI’s ability to understand and translate Cantonese is genuinely impressive, and I can see myself using these features on a daily basis. It’s not perfect, but it’s a big step forward, and I’m excited to see what other Cantonese language features Samsung has in store for us.
