I was super excited when Apple finally announced the new iPad Pro with its fancy OLED screen. I mean, OLED is the bomb! The colors are incredible, and it’s way more efficient than those old LCD panels. I figured with OLED, the iPad would finally get that awesome always-on display (AOD) feature that I love on my iPhone 14 Pro. You know, the one that shows you the time, notifications, and other stuff without having to wake up the entire screen. It’s so convenient!

But guess what? No AOD on the new iPad Pro! Can you believe it? I was so bummed when I found out. It’s like they took one step forward and two steps back. Apparently, the iPad’s OLED screen can go down to a super low 10Hz refresh rate, but for some reason, that’s not enough for AOD. My iPhone’s AOD goes down to 1Hz, and even my Apple Watch can do it!

I don’t get it. OLED is practically made for AOD. It’s like having a Ferrari and never taking it above 30 mph. What’s the point? It feels like a huge missed opportunity.

Maybe they’re worried about battery life? But seriously, with OLED’s efficiency, I doubt it would make a noticeable difference. I’d gladly sacrifice a few minutes of battery life for the convenience of AOD. It’s just such a useful feature, especially on a device like the iPad. I often use it as a secondary monitor or keep it on my desk to glance at throughout the day. AOD would make it so much more functional in those situations.

I’m holding out hope that maybe, just maybe, Apple will add AOD in a future software update. It seems like a no-brainer to me. But for now, I’m stuck turning on my iPad every time I want to see the time or check for notifications. What a drag!
