It feels like just yesterday we were talking about the merger, about the exciting future of Meizu and Geely coming together. Now, with barely a whisper, the CEO who spearheaded that merger, Shen Ziyu, is out. Just like that, replaced by Su Jing. No big press release, no farewell tour, just a quiet reshuffling on the website.
I remember thinking, when the whole Star Era thing was announced, that this was it, Meizu’s chance to break out. Shen Ziyu had this energy, you know? He seemed like he really bought into that vision of a phone that was more than just a phone, a phone that worked seamlessly with your car, your life. Now he’s leading XPENG, which is interesting, but leaves me wondering what happened. Was it just a matter of the right person for the right job? Or was there more to it?
It’s not like Su Jing is a nobody. She’s been there from the start, a driving force behind the scenes. She’s got the finance background, the business acumen, and she’s been recognized as a major player in the industry. But her experience is different. She’s not a phone guy, not in the same way Shen Ziyu was. He came from that world, lived it, breathed it.
I can’t help but feel a little unsettled by the whole thing. I’m still holding out hope for that grand vision, for Meizu to truly rise again. But change at the top, especially change this quiet, always makes you wonder. Is this a course correction? A sign of trouble? Or just business as usual in the tech world? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see what Su Jing does with the ship.
One thing that gives me a sliver of hope is the team around Su Jing. Lots of them are phone people, veterans of the industry. Some even have experience with both cars and phones, which makes sense given the whole car-phone integration thing they’re going for. So maybe, just maybe, the heart of what made Meizu special is still there, even if the figurehead has changed.
I guess that’s the thing about tech. It moves fast. It changes fast. And sometimes, it leaves you with more questions than answers. I just hope Meizu finds its way. They’ve been through a lot, and I’d hate to see them fade away.
